Free at-home donation pickup is one of the easiest ways to give. You don't have to drive anywhere. You don't have to be home when the pickup happens. The items you're donating leave your porch or driveway on a scheduled day, and the charity's partner network handles the rest.
Here's how the process works from schedule to receipt.
Step 1: Schedule the Pickup
Home pickup is booked online through a trusted charity partner. You'll be asked for:
- Your address
- The date range you'd like for pickup (usually a 1-2 week window)
- A brief description of what you're donating (bags of clothing, small furniture, boxed household items)
- Whether the pickup location is accessible without you being present (porch, driveway, front step)
Once scheduled, you'll get an email confirmation with the pickup date. To book pickup for veteran-benefit clothing and household donations, Vietnam Veterans of America handles the scheduling.
Step 2: Prepare Your Items
The day before or morning of pickup:
- Bag clothing in kitchen-sized trash bags or larger. Tie them closed.
- Box household goods in cardboard boxes. Tape closed if needed.
- Group like with like — clothing in one bag, kitchen items in another, books in a third. Not required, but it helps.
- Label if useful — a marker note on the bag ("Kids clothes, size 6-8") isn't required but often appreciated.
- Set items outside in a visible location — front porch, driveway, next to the garage.
If weather is a concern (rain, snow), put items under an overhang, in a covered porch, or in a garage that's accessible to the pickup driver. Note any access details when you schedule.
Step 3: The Pickup
Pickup drivers typically arrive during business hours on your scheduled day. You don't have to be home. The driver loads your bags and boxes and leaves a tax receipt at your door — either a printed acknowledgment or a note directing you to an emailed receipt.
If you want to be home for the pickup, most services can give you a narrower time window on request, but the standard is a full-day window.
Step 4: The Tax Receipt
You'll receive a receipt showing the date of the donation and the name of the receiving organization. The receipt does not include a dollar value — the IRS requires donors to determine their own valuation for non-cash contributions based on fair market value.
Track your estimated values as you pack — a simple list of items and estimated resale value is what most donors use. IRS Publication 561 (About Publication 561) covers non-cash valuation in detail, and the What Clothing Can I Donate? article covers what's typically accepted.
What If I Miss the Pickup?
If items aren't out on the scheduled day, most services will reschedule at your request. If bad weather or an emergency prevents the pickup, the driver will typically reschedule automatically and you'll get a notification.
